Happy Hats Ministry
On December 15, 2009, a new baby was born at Baylor All Saints in Fort Worth and when that baby was brought to the new mom, it was wearing a lovingly made hat with a card attached to it with the name of the “hat maker.” That was the day of the birth of the baby, but another birth happened on January 26, 2010, when a call was placed to our local hospital (Weatherford Regional) to see if there might be an interest in furnishing hats for newborns. The response was an overwhelming, joyous “Yes!”
Shortly thereafter, a group of NSBC ladies got together for an organizational meeting, names were tossed about for this new “ministry” God had given birth to, and Sandy Canton suggested “Happy Hats” which was the perfect name. Joyce Jackson wrote a poem to go with the hats, ladies had yarn, looms, crochet and knitting needles and we were off and running -- on a mission to provide a special hat to each newborn born in our local hospital and the one in Mineral Wells. We were concerned about being able to furnish enough hats (there were less than ten original “Happy Hatters”), but God had it covered all along. The number of “Happy Hatters” increased in number in proportion to the growth of the ministry. At present, there are approximately 60 “Happy Hatters.”
This ministry is truly one God envisioned, gave birth to and is maturing, and each “Happy Hatter” has to “hold on for the JOY ride” we each are in the midst of. It is His ministry. He allows us to show his love each time a hat is lovingly made, given to the recipient and when that recipient looks at the card attached and reads the name of the Happy Hatter, places the hat over their head; no doubt he/she feels the love flowing from that little hat through their body.
In 2011, we partnered with Operation Shower (www.operationshower.org) to furnish red, white and blue hats for their “Showers in a Box” for military spouses. In addition, since earlier this year, we began to send 240-260 hats monthly to Darnell Medical Center (Ft. Hood). Most recently, we began furnishing hats (see Happy Hats Request Form tab) for newborns or those
From 2010 through December 2017, Happy Hats has gifted 36,913 hats to local hospitals, adult cancer care centers, orphanages around the world, and the military.
Happy Hats has a monthly luncheon meeting at 11:00 a.m. on the 4th Monday of each month to fellowship, share a devotional, and reflect on what God has done/is doing with this ministry. We invite everyone to become a part of this fast growing and fun ministry. If you don’t know how to crochet or loom, our members will be glad to give you lessons before the meeting at 10:00 a.m.. Another way to be a part of this ministry is to donate new yarn or money for purchasing yarn/mailing expenses.
