NSBC has been blessed to serve Juan Seguin elementary school by providing weekend meals for dozens of children who rely on free and reduced lunches for their weekday meals. Our church is able to purchase healthy food items with member donations totaling more than $20,000 annually.
This ministry was born out of a partnership with W.I.S.D. and Kid’s Hope USA. In 2010, while working with school officials, we learned that many children who depend on subsidized meals at school, often go hungry when school is not in session. The fact that there could be hungry children, right in our own neighborhood was something that we just couldn’t bear. With that simple revelation, the wheels began turning and Packs of Love was born.
Beginning with a simple plan, to provide healthy weekend snacks to children who needed them, our team began purchasing bulk food at our local grocery stores, and packing backpacks for delivery to the school every Friday morning. Today, that same vision guides our efforts, as dozens of packs are stuffed with fruit cups, pudding, ravioli, mac & cheese, and even fresh fruit. We’re told the children simply can’t wait to receive their pack each Friday!
We feel blessed to be part of this ministry and are encouraged that other churches have joined in the effort by adopting schools in their neighborhoods. Working together, we can make sure that no child goes hungry on our watch.
It has also been very encouraging to be able to partner with WISD. In fact, our church was recently honored by WISD with a nomination for 2013 Employers for Education Excellence Award. Each of our members celebrate the fact that NSBC can and will work closely with community organizations to bring about positive change in the name of Christ.
